Gary and Marcia Nelson Emergency Care Fund

The Sonoma Valley Hospital treats about 10,000 patients per year.  In a community of 50,000 residents, this means that 1 in 5 of us will use the emergency room this year.

Since 1946, having an emergency room close to home at the Sonoma Valley Hospital has been a source of security.  Without a doubt many lives have been saved.  Local, twenty-four hour critical care is one of the qualities that defines our valley as a desirable place to live, a safe place to raise children and a comfortable place to grow older.  Unfortunately, throughout our state, declining insurance reimbursements and escalating costs are forcing many emergency rooms to close.  Here in Sonoma Valley, people are fighting to prevent this and not there is a way you an help.

“30 years ago, our son, at 3 months old, was a near-miss Sudden Infant Death Syndrome survivor.  By virtue of my infant CPR training through Sonoma Valley Hospital’s pre-natal classes, I was able to respond appropriately when I found my son’s lifeless body.  This and the skilled emergency room nurses and staff on duty that night saved his life.  When we needed it, the Sonoma Valley Hospital Emergency Room did exactly what one would expect and need a small community hospital to do:  Stabilize a patient in acute crisis and when stable, arrange for transport to an appropriate large hospital for further medical/surgical intervention.”  Marcia Nelson

Gary and Marcia Nelson have created a vehicle to help the people of Sonoma Valley keep our emergency room doors open.  The NELSON EMERGENCY CARE FUND was initiated to help underwrite  the high cost of emergency care.  The Fund is structured to provide revenue both for today and tomorrow.  Half of every donation is used to help cover today’s critical care losses, while the other half goes directly into an endowment account – a safety net for our emergency room of tomorrow.

To help keep Sonoma Valley Hospital vital and strong for the future we urge you to consider a financial partnership with the Sonoma Valley Fund and its parent Community Foundation Sonoma County.  Your contribution to the Nelson Emergency Care Fund will definitely save lives.  On behalf of your family and friends, on behalf of your entire community, you can make a difference today.

“We want to inspire neighbors to help neighbors and to create a safety net of caring for all Sonoma Valley residents, regardless of their ability to pay.  We want everyone in our community to get the emergency care they need, and for our local hospital to continue to thrive.”  Gary & Marcia Nelson
